INVAR 42
Invar 42 for Composite Tooling Applications is a low-expansion alloy containing 42% nickel, the balance primarily iron. Re-Steel’s Invar 42 has been specifically manufactured for fabricating composite tooling and is produced in accordance to the ASTM F30 specifications. Additionally, the chemistry limits the sulfur and phosphorus contents for better weldability. Invar 42 is also highly effective in magnetic applications and can be hot and cold formed while not being overly difficult to machine.

Heat to 1450°F (788°C) and hold at heat for at least
one-half hour per inch of thickness, air cool.
A silicon carbide wheel is desirable, preferably a soft
wheel which will wear without loading. For finish
grinding, a satisfactory grade to start with is No. 80
grit.
The forging temperature should be 2150/2200°F
(1177/1204°C). Avoid prolonged soaking to prevent
sulfur absorption from the furnace atmosphere.
Any of the conventional welding methods can be used.
When filler rod is required, Invar 42 is suggested
